Online Safety – Personal Identify

Online safety is very important both for users and the information they wish to upload. The following clip is a representation of a famous cartoon by Peter Steiner. Unlike Steiner’s cartoon, that was not actually intended as a cautionary tale, this version gets the widely perceived message across very well.

H.O.T Questioning

  • Who did the cat / dog, think he was talking to online?
  • How did the ending make you feel?
  • Why did the cat / dog pretend to be something they were not?
  • If the clip showed a boy / girl, what could they pretend to be? why would it matter?
  • How could the cat have prevented this from happening?
  • What online safety advice could you give to the cat?

Questions based on those suggested by CSER Digital Technologies MOOC.

Buddie - cyber safety

Buddie is an online teaching resource that has been developed for Australian schools from year 3; a separate package is available for secondary schools. It can be used as a whole class activity or individually. Students work through the process of constructing their own robotic buddy while completing learning activities designed to teach many aspects of cyber safety such as passwords and ownership of material posted online. It includes extensive teacher support, lesson plans and links across curriculum.

Thanks to Nae Wong for suggesting this great interactive learning package.

For a more indigenous perspective this clip gets to the heart of just how important a positive digital footprint can be.
