Design a User Interface

Fractus Learning

This great article from Fractus Learning, designed by an Australian educator, has some excellent ideas and downloadable resources designed to introduce students to App development. The design process is done using paper (templates provided), this is how professional designers start with a new ides. This point is actually one of the three important reasons why our students should be using paper, not code at this stage, to design apps or other user interface mockups. Designers actually do this, so this skill is immediately transferable to the real world of the software designer. The other two important reasons are price / availability and the fact that mistakes will be made as part of the design process, paper is easy to throw away (recycle please) and students can quickly get back to the drawing board.

Using iPad apps such as POP prototyping on paper or Launch – Simple Prototyping, students can then take screen shots to simulate their application and see the sequencing of pages in action.

H.O.T. Question It

  • Designing an effective User Interface is all about creating solutions to problems – define the solution that your app with create?
  • Describe your intended audience, what makes your design that ‘must use’ application for your target audience?
